چکیده

We prove nonlinear stability in L 1 of planar shock front solutions to a viscous conservation law in two spatial dimensions, and obtain an expression for the asymptotic form of small perturbations. The leading-order behavior is shown rigorously to be governed by an eeective diiusion coeecient depending on forces transverse to the shock front. The proof is based on a spectral analysis of the linearized problem.

Viscous Shock Wave Tracing, Local Conservation Laws, and Pointwise Estimates by Tai-ping Liu and Shih-hsien Yu

We introduce a new approach to decompose a system of viscous conservation laws with respect to each characteristic wave structures. Under this new decomposition, the global wave interactions of the system are reduced to coupling of nonlinear waves around constant states outside shock region and a scalar conservation law in the shock region to determine the behavior of local internal shock layer...

Viscous and Inviscid Stability of Multidimensional Planar Shock Fronts

We explore the relation between viscous and inviscid stability of multi-dimensional shock fronts, by studying the Evans function associated with the viscous shock proole. Our main result, generalizing earlier one-dimensional calculations, is that the Evans function reduces in the long-wave limit to the Kreiss{Sakamoto{ Lopatinski determinant obtained by Majda in the inviscid case, multiplied by...

Front Speed in the Burgers Equation with a Random Flux

We study the large time asymptotic shock front speed in an inviscid Burgers equation with a spatially random flux function. This equation is a prototype for a class of scalar conservation laws with spatial random coefficents such as the wellknown Buckley-Leverett equation for two-phase flows, and the contaminant transport equation in groundwater flows. The initial condition is a shock located a...

A conservation law model for bidensity suspensions on an incline

We study bidensity suspensions of a viscous fluid on an incline. The particles migrate within the fluid due to a combination of gravity-induced settling and shear induced migration. We propose an extension a recent model [N. Murisic, B. Pausader, D. Peschka, and A. L. Approximate Viscous Shock-Layer Analysis of Axisymmetric Bodies in Perfect Gas Hypersonic Flow

In this paper, an approximate axisymmetric method is developed which can reliably calculate fully viscous hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed bodies. In this method, a Maslen’s second-order pressure expression is used instead of the normal momentum equation. The combination of Maslen’s second-order pressure expression and viscous shock layer equations is developed to accurately and efficiently com...
